Measurement Lab....transparency to the ISP

Posted by: Jennifer Yoon

Google just announced a new open platform called Measurement Lab (M-Lab), which includes three publicly accessible tools, including the Network Diagnostic Tool, Network Path and Application Diagnosis, and Glasnost. Glasnost will "test whether BitTorrent is being blocked or throttled" on your broadband connection.

Google also listed two more tools as "coming soon" on M-Lab's site: DiffProbe, which determines "whether an ISP is giving some traffic a lower priority than other traffic"; and NANO, which determines "whether an ISP is degrading the performance of a certain subset of users, applications, or destinations."

Googles new tools should bring some much-needed transparency to the ISP industry's throttling and blocking practices.
