Google Requires Mobile Ads to Contain Price Data, Billing Intervals

Internet giant Google, Inc. has required mobile content text and image advertisers to display their products' prices and billing intervals in ad text. It will no longer accept text or image ads that did not contain the price and billing interval when promoting mobile content services.
This policy change comes after discussion and action by Florida's Attorney General. Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum (R) in recent months has taken action against a number of mobile content companies in an ongoing crackdown to enforce new standards that require companies to disclose the cost of ringtones and other content in all online advertising.
In that effort, the state has reached settlements of $1 million with a number of companies—the latest an agreement announced Feb. 20 with California-based New Motion, Inc. and Traffix, Inc., which jointly do business as Atrinsic.
The AG policy, among other things, requires that advertisers offering a product or service as "free" also must disclose the price if receipt of the free item is contingent on a consumer making a purchase. Sponsored links and banner advertisements containing a representation that a consumer may receive a product or service for free must also contain a numerical representation of the price as well as a term for subscription products.
Google also requires that mobile content advertisers follow certain restrictions when requesting personal data or allowing individuals to sign up via text message.
