Fixes included in the update, which is downloadable from Microsoft's Web site, cover all major components of the suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Entourage.
In Word, the update fixes an issue that causes spaces between words to be lost when documents are opened. It also fixes a glitch that causes OnOpen and OnClose Macros not to function correctly. The update also addresses a problem in Word in which font sizes in text tables can change unexpectedly.
In Excel, reliability is improved when chart data is updated, and there's also a fix for a bug that prevented Excel from calculating formulas when workbooks are opened.
A PowerPoint fix rectifies a problem that caused the Service Pack 1 version of the program to take an inordinately long time to open a presentation. Entourage stability also is improved when the host computer is awakened from sleep mode, according to Microsoft.
The update also includes a number of other fixes.
Also on Wednesday, Microsoft released a utility for Mac Office 2004 that allows the program to open files created in Mac Office 2008's new XML-based format. The release of the converter had been delayed several times.More Software Insights
