RealNetworks RealDVD software contested by Hollywoood |
|
Leading Movie Studios have filed suit against RealNetworks for their creation of RealDVD, software that enables users to create an image of DVD on their personal computer's hard drive.
The movie studios' complaint alleged that a software program created by RealNetworks, Inc., RealDVD: • unlawfully circumvents the encryption technology protecting movies on DVD, in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act; and • violates the terms of the license agreement under which RealNetworks obtained access to the encryption keys that unlock digital content protected by the DVD Content Scramble System (CSS). Real Networks has countersued DVD Copy Control Assocation, in an attempt for declatory judgement, stating that their actions do not infringe or otherwise circumvent the CSS license associated with any and all DVDs. The impact of this case is much larger than it would appear. This could drastically impact the storage and preservation of any video/dvd in a digital format, thereby essentially making it illegal to create a personal backup of any DVD.
